LOOKING AT THE GAMES

When Georgian Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed on the opening day of the Vancouver Games, a tragic dark cloud settled in over Western Canada.

Already, there was a serious problem with a track that some said was too fast and too long, resulting in the shortening of both the men's and women's course and the erection of walled protection in the area that Kumaritashvili crashed and slammed into a metal support post. A week later, bobsledders were complaining about their course, citing many of the same problems.

After the Kumaritashvili accident, a series of problems seemed to be arising, from the mundane to critical.

Chief amongst them, of course, was the weather, which was unseasonably warm, causing delays in the skiing events and training runs. Athletes were forced to shed clothing, courses were unusually soft or even non-existent. Snow was trucked in or flown in via helicopters.

There were riots in the streets of Vancouver, staged by disgruntled residents who were following in the footsteps of unbelievably demanding rioters that have plagued games all over the earth, except in Beijing, of course.

The Vancouver Olympic committee came under fire for erecting an ugly chain-link fence around the giant cauldron that symbolized the Games, keeping fans from enjoying the experience further. The flame was a source of irritation in the first place, given that it malfunctioned during the opening ceremonies, leaving Canadian speed skater Catriona Le May Doan standing with a lit torch that couldn't do its job. She ad libbed with grace, holding the useless torch high.

There was a security glitch in which a man who is now reportedly in a mental institution printed a pass on the Internet and approached within several feet of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

The Games went on, of course, but not for some ticket-holders to the moguls events. They were told that they couldn't attend because the ground beneath what would have been their feet, which was being buoyed by hay bales, couldn't hold their weight due to the warming conditions.

Then there was NBC. In America, we depend on NBC to convey the Olympics to us, but the network, predictably, came under all kinds of fire.

NBC was broadcasting over several on-air venues. There was NBC itself, MSNBC, USA and Universal HD. It seemed like if we wanted to watch a hockey game, we couldn't find it on NBC. We had Replica Breitling Watches to look to one of the others, and who the heck knows where those are located on our cable systems?

Because of that, many of us probably missed out on one of the wonders of these Olympics, the curling events, which have been fascinatingly broadcast over CNBC. Seriously, if you haven't caught it, you're missing one hoot of an event.

Meanwhile, if you were hoping to watch the USA-Norway men's hockey showdown, you weren't going to find it on prime time on Channel 7. Nah, you had to check out one of the subsidiary stations. Turn back to Channel 7 and you find yourself watching men's figure skating champ Evan Lysacek spinning around the ice in his frilly black see-through outfit. Not exactly something most men want to be watching.

The most aggravating aspect of the coverage might be tape delays. The downhill and Super G events, broadcast at night, were necessarily shown on delay. Half the audience probably never realized it. Half did.

FANS TURN ON POMPEY CHIEF; Sto

Byline: Mark Ryan

PORTSMOUTH'S fight for survival turned nasty last night. Prada Replica While Pompey sank closer to relegation with a 2-1 Premier League defeat by 10-man Stoke, chief executive Peter Storrie claimed he had been subjected to 'very serious threats' and his family had been abused by fans of the troubled club.

Storrie has been the one constant presence behind the scenes at Fratton Park in an extraordinary 10 months during which four different men have taken control of the club.

He insisted yesterday that, despite the personal attacks, he would continue to work to save the club from oblivion and added that he believes there is still a chance of an 11th-hour buy-out by a South African consortium.

The club could be liquidated a week tomorrow when they face a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs over a disputed tax bill of [pounds sterling]12.4million. But reports suggested they had sought permission to sell players outside the transfer window in a bid to stay afloat.

Storrie believes the fans have targeted him for proposing the fire-sale, while he claims the idea actually came from the Premier League. Yesterday, however, the League rejected a fire-sale -- one of the only ways Portsmouth have to raise funds to pay off some of their total debts of [pounds sterling]60m -- because they did not consider it 'appropriate at this time'.

Storrie said: 'I have had very serious threats from supporters of the club. There has been a lot of abuse against me and my family because the fans think I was the one who put this proposal forward. It categorically was not me. The Premier League's decision is surprising because the idea came from them in the first place. The suggestion was put to us that this was worth doing.

'I imagine what has happened is that they have received objections from other clubs, which wouldn't really surprise me.' Portsmouth are reported to need at least [pounds sterling]20m immediately just to avoid being declared insolvent at the High Court. Manager Avram Grant, having seen his team sink to another defeat, made an impassioned plea to the courts and the Premier League last night to help save the club from liquidation.

Grant said: 'I hope the High Court and Premier League will understand they also have responsibility. The Replica Miu Miu Handbags football team doesn't just belong to the people in charge, it belongs to the fans as well. A football club is not a normal business, everyone needs to understand this.'

Storrie insisted that, despite apparent interest from a Hong Kongbased consortium, a deal with the South African group could be done even as early as tomorrow.

'The South African consortium is the one I have been talking to this week,' said Storrie. 'I am very hopeful.

The owner, Balram Chainrai, has stayed on in the country to do a deal on Monday if we receive the documentation from them.

'Mr Chainrai has written off [pounds sterling]10m of his own money with a possibility of getting it back over the next 10 or 15 years. It is a very, very honourable thing to do.'

Storrie rejected the idea that the best option for Portsmouth would be to go into administration. 'Avram Grant is still confident we can get out of this and we have a good squad of players,' he said. 'We don't want to lose nine points (the penalty for liquidation), we want to stay up.' The likes of Algerian left-back Nadir Belhadj and promising centr

GOAL-DEN COX PIPS PILGRIMS; Bu

Byline: CHRIS LEPKOWSKI

SIMON Cox celebrated his return to the West Bromwich Albion line-up by grabbing the only goal of a badtempered game at Plymouth Argyle.

The Baggies striker scored his eighth of the season to ensure Roberto Di Matteo's men keep pressure on leaders Newcastle and stay ahead of third-placed Nottingham Forest.

But Albion's victory came at a cost, with Jerome Thomas being red-carded just before the end for a dreadful challenge on David McNamee.

pandora charms

In fairness both sides could have lost players with Joe Mattock, Kari Arnesen and Damien Johnson all guilty of rash tackles during the game, played out on a dreadful pitch.

Cox pounced in the 66th minute when he finished off Roman Bednar's noddown from Jerome Thomas' cross.

Albion made four changes to the side -one enforced, with Joe Mattock replacing the injured Marek Cech. Robert Koren was axed in favour of Simon Cox, with Abou Meite and Gianni Zuiverloon in for the rested Jonas Olsson and Gonzalo Jara.

The Baggies wasted no time from the start. Bednar and Cox before playing the ball into Chris Brunt. The winger slammed a left-footed shot into the sidenetting from some 20 yards after just 22 seconds.

Dreadful At the other end Plymouth went close through Alan Judge in the sixth minute. Albion left the Argyle midfielder unmarked allowing him to slide in a shot. Judge slipped as he teed up the shot, which took some of the sting out of his effort - allowing Tamas to block it.

Albion's plight wasn't helped by a dreadful Home Park pitch which was cutting up within 10 minutes of the kick-off. Not surprisingly it prompted a few misplaced passes and lapses of control, with both sides struggling to get used to it.

A careless Meite challenge on Jamie Mackie gave Plymouth a free-kick on the edge of Albion's area. Judge's curling effort sailed over the Baggies wall but just whizzed away from Carson's goal. Albion, once they settled started to show slick movement in the final third, with Dorrans' movement and Jerome Thomas' pace not being dealt with convincingly by the home side.

Dorrans went close when Arnesen missed the ball, allowing Dorrans to get a first-time shot. The Baggies midfielder's effort lacked punch and was easily held by Stockdale. Bednar then muscled his way past Arnesen as Albion countered through Cox. The Czech international squeezed in a shot but, again, Stockdale came to Argyle's rescue.

Meite was being particularly over zealous at times with his challenges. He was Replica AH booked in the 35th minute for a rash challenge on Rory Fallon and was goaded a few more times during the closing stages of the first-half, reacting vocally to a strong Mackie tackle when he felt the Plymouth man had raised his studs as he went for the ball. Karl Duguid was forced off for Plymouth during injury time when he appeared to twist his knee when he turned in the box. He was replaced by David McNamee.

Di Matteo's men started the second half as they started the first, going close to scoring. Simon Cox got in front of Arnesen and sent in a cross for Bednar but both he and Stockdale failed to get a touch to the ball. Plymouth should have hit gold in the 49th minute when Mackie squandered a great chance. He was left unattended to latch onto Arnesen's long cross. The Argyle man snatched his effort and drove it over from eight yards.

The game was drifting into even more mediocrity w
