Three for trial on assaults at

THREE Northern Rivers men charged over serious assaults on two men outside a hotel in Byron Bay will stand trial in the Lismore District Court on May 31.

Nicholas Stafford Sharp, 27, of Ocean Shores, and Lee Frederick Funnell, 26, of Brunswick Heads, appeared in Lismore District Court on Monday before Judge James Black, when the trial date was agreed to by their legal representatives and the Crown.

The three men - Sharp, Funnell and Dean William Phelps, 25, of Suffolk Park - have all pleaded not guilty.

It is alleged they inflicted grievous bodily harm on Dallas Arnold, 31, of Pottsville, at Byron Bay on March 7 last year, and that they threatened to use unlawful violence towards other persons to cause fear.

Funnell and Phelps are also pleading not guilty to a third charge that they, in company, assaulted Nathan Spratt, 31, causing him bodily harm.

Sharp and Funnell left the Lismore Courthouse separately following the brief mention of their matters. Phelps did not have to attend, but had legal representation.

Lawyer Amy Barker revealed that Sharp, who is on $100,000 bail guaranteed by his father, had applied for legal aid to cover the cost of his defence team.

The Crown said the trial was expected to run for at least 10 days.

Ms Barker told the court that with 21 civilian witnesses the matter was more likely to take three weeks with some witnesses coming from overseas.

Three decades of murder and mi

On 4 March 1980, Robert Mugabe became Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. Richard Dowden explains how this intelligent and charismatic man became addicted to brutality

Next week marks 30 years since Robert Mugabe was elected Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.

Last month was 20 years since Nelson Mandela left jail. The two men have much in common. Both are nationalist leaders who fought white rule in southern Africa. Both served long periods in prison, Mandela 27 years, Mugabe 11. Both emerged and won elections and then offered their white oppressors the hand of forgiveness and friendship. Both created governments of national unity to deal with rival movements: in South Africa Mandela faced the Zulu Inkatha movement. In Zimbabwe Mugabe brought into his Cabinet the largely Ndebele Zimbabwe African Patriotic Union (Zapu).

Most observers had predicted a bloodbath in both countries. That had seemed the most logical of all the scenarios. No one had any doubt about which man had the more difficult task. Apartheid in South Africa was a far more brutal system than white rule in Zimbabwe. ghd hair straighteners Whites were a bigger proportion of South Africa's population than the whites of Rhodesia - as Zimbabwe was called before independence. And Afrikaners in South Africa had lived there far longer and had no links to any other homeland. White Rhodesians were relatively recent arrivals, many with opportunities to go elsewhere.

Initially both men brought peace and eschewed revenge. Overcoming the immediate threats, they returned their countries to economic growth. With the end of apartheid the scene was set for the economic take-off of southern Africa, perhaps the whole of subSaharan Africa. Mandela and Mugabe could have stood together, turning their countries away from the painful past and launching Africa into an era of peace and prosperity.

But while Mandela emerged as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, Mugabe's reputation is in ruins; a power-crazed dictator who destroyed his country and the lives of millions so he could stay in power.

Many writers have tried to prove that Mugabe was always evil, bent on revenge or trying, like Pol Pot, to bring his country to a Year Zero, from which he could create a perfect communist state. These days he is most commonly seen as a crazed old man, sitting on the wreckage of Zimbabwe, protecting violent, corrupt cronies.

It was not always like that. In 1980 Mugabe came to power with 57 of the 100 seats in parliament. His nearest rival, Joshua Nkomo, had 20. Ten seats were reserved for the countries' 230,000 whites but an estimated 45,000 emigrated at independence. Mugabe formed a government of national unity with three white ministers and made Nkomo minister of home affairs. He entered parliament for the first time alongside Ian Smith, the former prime minister, and re-employed his intelligence chief. 'Let us put a line through the past, ' he said.

The Zimbabwean economy, boosted by good rains, rocketed by 15.4 per cent in 1980 and 12.9 per cent in 1981. War had caused average income per capita to fall from $175.5 in 1974 to $134 in 1979 but it bounced back to $170 in 1981. And Zimbabweans realised that the future lay in education. As soon as the war ended, Mugabe's government pumped money into schools and the number of schoolchildren shot up from 893,000 in 1979 to 1.8 million two years later.

Those first years were marked by optimism while a veneer of socialist rhetoric masked pragmatic conservative policies. Where, many asked, was Mugabe's communism?

Three-minute therapy, anyone W

Byline: by Sarah Hughes

IT'S a Saturday night and I'm standing in a crowded room in New York surrounded by men and women chattering nervously. 'What are you going to ask?' I hear a well-preserved blonde Manhattanite ask her skinny brunette friend.

Dolce & Gabbana Handbags

'I'm going to bring up my commitment issues,' the other woman replies. 'I'm forever finding reasons to end relationships... I thought it would be good to get some advice on how to deal with that.'

Welcome to 'Speed Shrinking' -- New York's latest phenomenon, which is basically, three-minute 'speed dating'-style slots with psychiatrists.

The concept was invented almost by accident by author Susan Shapiro, who came up with it to promote her comic novel, of the same name, which centres around one woman's desperate search for a shrink. Since then, events have snowballed to take on a life of their own.

'When we did the first event it was really a book party to promote the novel,' Shapiro admits. 'But people enjoyed talking to the therapists and suddenly we started getting requests to do another one and then another and then all sorts of people got involved.'

Among those intrigued by Shapiro's idea were Big Brother producers Endemol, who recently approached the author with a view to optioning the idea of Speed Shrinking for a reality TV show (although all plans for that are currently on hold).

'It's been slightly insane,' she admits. 'On one hand, I'm an author, not a party planner, but on the other, I really like introducing people to these professionals and seeing to Celeb include Thandie Sarah Parker Bruni-them get advice. It works because I know all the psychiatrists personally and know how good they are. I would not let just anyone take part.'

Nor does the demand for these events show any signs of slowing down. Shapiro's website (Susanshaprio.net) lists a host of upcoming New York events and there are plans to try something similar in Los Angeles.

Could she see Speed Shrinking spreading to Europe as well? 'People are welcome to try,' she says, laughing. 'I think it could work, absolutely, I think it's a really good way to introduce the idea of therapy to people.

'There are those who come to these events who would never have dreamed of talking to a counsellor, but they find it so helpful that they end up deciding to use a therapist regularly.'

So how does Speed Shrinking work? The premise is simple: sitting at a table at one end of the crowded room are eight psychiatrists and psychotherapists ranging from the relatively straight-forward such as Dr Vatal Thakkar, who works with clients with addiction and bipolar disorders, to the more outre, like the laid-back Sherene Schostak, who combines Jungian therapy with astrology readings.

And just like with speed-dating, each 'client' at tonight's event has three minutes to put their problems to the first professional in line before the countdown begins and it's on to the next one.

'I think it's become popular because of the recession,' says Sherry Amatenstein, the author of recently released couple's therapy book, The Complete Marriage Counsellor, and one of the co-hosts.

'You know this is a city where a lot of people use psychiatrists but right now many of them don't have Cartier Replica Watches the money to spare or maybe just have the sort of question that could be answered relatively quickly, so an event like this really

THREE men kicked a man on the ground in a vicious town centre assault.

The brutal attack on Martin Millward in Stoke town centre in the early hours of August 23 last year was captured on CCTV.

Mr Oldham said: "He finds it very difficult to accept that he could have done anything like that."

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones said Dunn was the instigator and sentenced him to 30 weeks' detention in a young offenders' institution, suspended for two years, with 12 months' supervision, a requirement to attend the controlling anger programme, and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Trevor-Jones said: "This was a joint attack - the three of you on one man on the ground. You punched or kicked or stamped on him. It is almost miraculous that h
