All you need is... a little bl

THINK of Sixties fashion, and mini skirts immediately spring to mind. But 50 years ago, the mini was still a few years off.

The decade was a classic in fashion terms, as young people threw off the straight-laced look of the 1950s and turned fashion into fun. Skirts crept up, boots went shiny, colours burst onto the scene and Audrey Hepburn wore what was to become the ultimate timeless fashion piece - the classic little black dress - in 1961's Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Shoe designers unique lampwork Rubber Bracelets began to use synthetic materials and introduced zips in the side of boots. Go-go boots - tight fitting, patent boots with a chunky heel that almost reach the knee - hit the big time with Nancy Sinatra's 1966 song, These Boots Were Made For Walking.

Shorter skirts also came to the fore in 1966, when Mary Quant took advantage of the recent invention of tights, and her hemlines rose to several inches above the knee.

Having begun with a very classic look, the decade ended with the peace-loving long-haired hippy look of Woodstock in 1969. Flared jeans, bikini tops, macrame jewellery and the ubiquitous peace symbol became must-have items.

And through it all sang The Beatles, whose fashion contribution has to be the black polo neck jumper.
